Summary¶
"DLSS 5 On" is a side-by-side comparison meme that exploded on March 16–17, 2026, following Nvidia's GTC 2026 announcement of DLSS 5, a generative AI-powered graphics enhancement tech. The format places an original image next to an over-smoothed, AI-beautified version labeled "DLSS 5 On," satirizing the technology's tendency to alter character faces with uncanny, hyper-polished "AI slop" aesthetics. Viral examples included Kratos in makeup, yassified historical photographs, and cartoon characters rendered unsettlingly realistic. The meme struck a cultural nerve around AI overreach in creative fields and prompted formal responses from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and multiple game studios.
Description¶
Overview¶
"DLSS 5 On" (also stylized as DLSS 5 Off / DLSS 5 On) is a side-by-side image comparison meme format that erupted across the internet in mid-March 2026, sparked by Nvidia's announcement of DLSS 5 — its newest and most controversial iteration of Deep Learning Super Sampling technology. The format typically presents two images labeled "DLSS 5 Off" and "DLSS 5 On," where the second image is intentionally distorted, over-smoothed, AI-beautified, or generally nightmarish in a very specific way: shinier skin, puffier lips, glazed-donut lighting, and cheekbones that belong on a person who has never had a single bad day in their life. The meme rapidly became one of the most fertile templates of early 2026, weaponizing collective anxiety about AI overreach in the one domain where gamers are almost professionally territorial — their graphics.
Background: What Is DLSS, Anyway?¶
DLSS is Nvidia's AI-driven image enhancement technology, first introduced in 2018 alongside the RTX 20-series GPUs. At its core, DLSS originally used a neural network to upscale lower-resolution frames to higher resolutions, giving players a performance boost without a noticeable visual hit. Over the years, it expanded to include frame generation (DLSS 3) and multi-frame generation (DLSS 4), features that allowed compatible GPUs to synthesize entirely new frames between rendered ones.1
By the time DLSS 5 was announced, the technology had been integrated into over 750 games — a remarkable installed base that Nvidia often cited as proof of mainstream acceptance.2
The Announcement That Started Everything¶
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| March 17, 2026 | Nvidia unveils DLSS 5 at GTC 2026 |
| March 16–17, 2026 | First memes begin circulating on X and Reddit |
| March 18, 2026 | KYM entry formally documented |
| March 19, 2026 | Major gaming outlets publish meme roundups |
| Fall 2026 | DLSS 5 consumer rollout (planned) |
At the Nvidia GTC 2026 keynote, CEO Jensen Huang unveiled DLSS 5, describing it as a "real-time neural rendering model" that uses generative AI — not just upscaling — to generate visual elements like lighting, skin texture, and facial detail on top of existing game assets.3 Huang declared it the "GPT moment for graphics." The internet had other names for it.
The official demo video prominently featured Resident Evil Requiem, with a before-and-after clip of character Grace Ashcroft. The "after" — DLSS 5 enabled — showed her with fuller lips, higher cheekbones, reduced under-eye bags, and an overall appearance best described as "AI beauty filter applied by someone who has never met a human face." The video accumulated over 183,700 views in 20 hours alongside approximately 11,000 dislikes (tracked via the Return YouTube Dislike browser extension) and a comment section that could charitably be described as spirited.4
The Meme Format¶
Structure¶
The template follows the classic before/after or Product Off / Product On comparison structure — a format with deep roots in gaming culture, most notably the RTX On / RTX Off meme from 2018, which celebrated ray tracing by showing dramatically better-looking environments.5
The DLSS 5 version subverts this:
- "DLSS 5 Off": The original image — a game character, historical photograph, cartoon, real person, or anything with a face.
- "DLSS 5 On": The same image, but run through a beauty filter, a yassification app, AI image generation, heavy retouching, or any process that makes it look uncannily over-polished and vaguely inhuman.
The joke writes itself. And then it wrote itself about 50 more times in the first 24 hours.6
Notable Variants¶
- Kratos (God of War): Perhaps the most widely shared — the battle-hardened Spartan warrior reappears wearing what appears to be full foundation, blush, and lip gloss.7
- Kevin James: The beloved everyman actor's face, already a well-worn meme canvas, was rendered into an entirely unrecognizable smoothed-over entity.
- Migrant Mother: Dorothea Lange's iconic 1936 Great Depression photograph appeared with the subject's despondent expression replaced by a beaming smile and heavy makeup, captioned "Nvidia Presents: DLSS 5."8
- Jensen Huang himself: Nvidia's CEO was not spared, receiving his own DLSS 5 On treatment by community members.
- Patrick Star: The beloved SpongeBob SquarePants character was rendered hyper-realistically, which is exactly as unsettling as it sounds.
- Animated & Cartoon Characters: Any character with a stylized aesthetic became prime territory. The joke is especially effective when the "On" version strips away an intentional art style in favor of generic AI realism.
Warning
Several viral "DLSS 5 On" meme images circulating online are not actual output from DLSS 5 technology. They are hand-edited or generated using separate AI image tools for comedic effect. Nvidia has not yet released the full SDK to consumers.9
Community Reaction & Cultural Criticism¶
The meme wasn't just fun — it was pointed. Beneath the laughs, the format crystallized a genuine concern about AI's role in creative work.
Additional Information
Gamers had broadly accepted previous DLSS versions because they were essentially invisible — the technology improved performance without visibly changing the art. DLSS 5 broke this unspoken contract by making decisions about how a face should look, decisions that belonged to the artists and developers who designed those characters.
A frequently quoted Reddit caption summed it up neatly: "DLSS 5 when it forgets the game has an art style."10
Critics compared the effect to:
- Yassification: Internet parlance for over-beautifying something using filters until it looks surreal and hyperglam.
- Looksmaxxing AI tools: The kind of beautification filters common on dating apps and selfie cameras — fine on Instagram, jarring in Starfield.
- AI slop: A broad term for AI-generated imagery that looks superficially polished but lacks intent, soul, or fidelity to source material.
Some pointed out the hardware requirements were almost satirically steep: Nvidia reportedly used two RTX 5090 GPUs to demonstrate the feature — one to run the game, one to process DLSS 5. A single RTX 5090 costs approximately $1,500 at MSRP. Memes about a "$3,000 yassification filter" followed promptly.11
Even game developers weighed in. Capcom and Ubisoft developers noted on social media that they had found out about DLSS 5 at the same time as the public — which did not inspire confidence in the feature's integration pipeline.3
Nvidia's Response¶
Nvidia moved quickly into damage control mode. CEO Jensen Huang pushed back at a GTC press Q&A, telling Tom's Hardware reporters that critics were "completely wrong," explaining that developers retain full artistic control and that the AI fuses "controllability of geometry and textures" with generation rather than replacing them.7
Nvidia also pinned a comment on their official YouTube demo video reassuring viewers:
"Important to note with this technology advance — game developers have full, detailed artistic control over DLSS 5's effects..."12
Whether this response helped or merely added more meme fuel to the fire is, at this point, a matter of public record.
Relation to Other Memes & Formats¶
| Meme | Year | Similarity |
|---|---|---|
| RTX On / RTX Off | 2018 | Direct format ancestor; celebrated the same tech category |
| Yassify Filter | 2021 | Same visual effect; AI beauty over-application |
| AI Slop | 2023–2024 | Broader category of uncanny, over-processed AI imagery |
| Migrant Mother edits | Recurring | Classic photographic subject adapted for the template |
Tip
The "RTX On / RTX Off" meme was celebratory — it showed ray tracing making games look dramatically better. The DLSS 5 version is its evil twin: the same format, inverted into satire.
Legacy & Significance¶
Barely a week old at time of writing, the DLSS 5 On meme is already notable for a few reasons:
- Speed of proliferation: Over 50 distinct meme variants were documented within 24 hours of the announcement.6
- Cross-community reach: Gaming communities, tech enthusiasts, AI skeptics, and general internet users all engaged with the format simultaneously — a rare convergence.
- Real-world effect: The meme backlash was significant enough to generate formal responses from Nvidia's CEO and prompted multiple game studios (Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft, WB Games) to issue statements about their intended use of the feature.3
- Broader cultural resonance: The meme arrived as a referendum on the creeping encroachment of AI into creative processes. It did so with memes about Kratos in makeup, which is arguably more effective than any think-piece.
Whether DLSS 5's fall 2026 launch rehabilitates the technology's reputation or generates a second wave of memes remains an open question. Either way, the internet is ready.
