The format typically presents two images labeled "DLSS 5 Off" and "DLSS 5 On," where the second image is intentionally distorted, over-smoothed, AI-beautified, or generally nightmarish in a very specific way: shinier skin, puffier lips, glazed-donut lighting, and cheekbones that belong on a person who has never had a single bad day in their life. The meme rapidly became one of the most fertile templates of early 2026, weaponizing collective anxiety about AI overreach in the one domain where gamers are almost professionally territorial — their graphics.

Background: What Is DLSS, Anyway?¶

DLSS is Nvidia's AI-driven image enhancement technology, first introduced in 2018 alongside the RTX 20-series GPUs. The video accumulated over 183,700 views in 20 hours alongside approximately 11,000 dislikes (tracked via the Return YouTube Dislike browser extension) and a comment section that could charitably be described as spirited.⁴

The Meme Format¶

Critics compared the effect to:

• Yassification: Internet parlance for over-beautifying something using filters until it looks surreal and hyperglam.
• Looksmaxxing AI tools: The kind of beautification filters common on dating apps and selfie cameras — fine on Instagram, jarring in Starfield.

Some pointed out the hardware requirements were almost satirically steep: Nvidia reportedly used two RTX 5090 GPUs to demonstrate the feature — one to run the game, one to process DLSS 5.
