Overview¶

Frieren Looking Up (also known as Upward Angle Frieren Drawing or the Friangle) is an amateur fan art drawing of the character Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, depicting her from an upward angle, looking at the sky. The drawing became a viral sensation in November 2025, going viral and inspiring memes, redraws and edits.

What makes this image so immediately recognizable (and beloved) is the anatomical... let's call it creative interpretation of Frieren's facial structure. Her chin is drawn incorrectly, making it look pointed and flat or concave at the bottom. The result is a drawing that is simultaneously earnest, endearing, and gloriously wonky.

Origin¶

On November 12th, 2025, Redditor SpaceDev1 posted a drawing to the /r/Frieren subreddit, titled "Frieren." The accompanying text read with humble self-awareness: "I practiced drawing faces in a different angle, but it looks kinda weird lol."

The artist was attempting what's known in art circles as a "worm's-eye view" or low-angle perspective—a difficult perspective known as the "looking up" angle. This technique is tricky and requires spatial reasoning, foreshortening and facial anatomy's deeper understanding in order to avoid distortion. SpaceDev1's earnest attempt at this challenging angle resulted in a piece that was, frankly, a bit geometrically challenged.

The original post garnered over 770 upvotes in two days—respectable, but nothing viral. That changed the next day.

The "Friangle" Art Challenge¶

The trend quickly transformed into a full-blown art challenge, with creators trying (and often failing hilariously) to recreate the tricky upward angle. Artists across skill levels began posting their own attempts, often with self-deprecating captions about how genuinely difficult the perspective is.

Professional Artists Join In¶

Professional animators, illustrators, and manga artists have begun uploading their own low angle perspective drawings of the titular elf. Notable participants include:

Tsukasa Kotobuki

The Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan co-character designer acknowledged the difficulty of the perspective and commented that the angle of the ears proved to be a greater challenge than the chin. He made a series of posts detailing his progress as he worked on the challenge until the final product was complete, culminating in an animated GIF depicting Frieren tilting her head up.

Oda Takashi

An artist who's a member of Kyoto Seika University's Faculty of Manga and the Japanese Society of Artistic Anatomy, dove deeper into the anatomical aspect of the perspective with a series of drawings that included showcases of the skeleton and muscles.

Kono Tsubasa

The contemporary artist gave props to SpaceDev1 for tackling such a challenging angle and noted that their own attempt turned Frieren into "JoJo's Bizarre Frieren."

Celebrity Endorsement¶

The drawing became so viral that it caught the attention of Frieren's English voice actress, Mallorie Rodak, who, in return, used it as her profile picture on several of her social media accounts. This endorsement from an official cast member gave the meme significant legitimacy within the anime community.

The Artist's Response¶

On November 17th, SpaceDev1 posted a statement on their X account (@SpaceDev1158): "So my drawing blew up. It even became a meme. Thank you so much for that."

The artist expressed genuine gratitude for the community response: "I'm happy that it inspired a lot of you to draw this apparently hard angle. I'm glad that you challenged yourself to do better than I did."

SpaceDev1 also shared additional artwork, including drawings of Fern and Stark to "complete the family." The artist added with touching humility: "I didn't even know that drawing would touch that many people's souls."

This unexpected form of Frieren-related internet virality comes just a couple of months before Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 debuts on January 16, 2026.

Rather than mocking the artist, the community rallied around SpaceDev1, offering constructive tips, creating supportive redraws, and celebrating the courage it takes to attempt difficult artistic techniques publicly.
