Philip J. Fry, usually called Fry, is the central character of Futurama, voiced by Billy West. A pizza delivery worker from 1999, he is accidentally cryogenically frozen on New Year's Eve and wakes one thousand years later, where he becomes part of the Planet Express crew.¹ His earnestness, poor impulse control, and highly readable facial expressions made him one of the series' most reusable characters online.

Meme culture¶

Fry's most recognizable reaction format is Futurama Fry, also known as Not Sure If. It uses a narrowed-eye still from the episode “The Lesser of Two Evils,” commonly captioned in the form “Not sure if X / or just Y.” The format turns Fry's suspicious pause into an internal monologue about uncertainty, trolling, or an absurdly close comparison.²

Another long-lived format is “Shut Up and Take My Money!” In the 2010 episode “Attack of the Killer App,” Fry impatiently offers cash while trying to buy the eyePhone parody. The reaction image quickly became a general-purpose way to signal enthusiastic approval, especially for products, games, gadgets, fan art, or deliberately tempting bad ideas.³
