Sarilang!!!
Overview
This is a static screenshot of a popular user-uploaded remix video from Bilibili. The top of the image shows the video metadata: the video is titled 'Sarilang!!!', has 17.161 million plays, 35,000 danmu (bullet comments), was published on July 19, 2021, and peaked at 6th place on Bilibili's full-site ranking. The video frame itself is from the classic 'Liu Huaqiang buys watermelon' scene from the Chinese TV series Conquer, and is almost completely covered by dense bullet comments, most of which are 'kksk' (a common ACG internet slang of Japanese origin meaning 'I like this very much'), along with other positive comments like 'addictive', 'awesome', 'sounds great'. The hardcoded subtitle on the video reads 'Hey Huaqiang Sarilang~', which plays on the popular homophone pun that 'Sarilang' sounds identical to the 'someone is killed' line from the original scene, creating a comedic cross-over effect with the folk song The Fiery Sarilang.
Origin notes
This screenshot originates from a viral guichu (mad/remix) video published on Bilibili, a leading Chinese ACG video sharing platform, in July 2021. The original source materials are two separate works: the 2003 Chinese crime TV series Conquer (specifically the widely memed 'Liu Huaqiang buys watermelon' clip), and the popular Chinese folk song The Fiery Sarilang. The remixer used the homophone pun between 'Sarilang' and the Mandarin phrase 'sha ren la' (someone is killed) from the original TV scene to combine the two works, making the video extremely popular on Bilibili and further spreading the Sarilang homophone meme among Chinese internet users.
